LED lighting
First though, a word about LED lighting itself. An LED – or light emitting diode – is a device to which an electric current is applied in order to generate light – a process known as electroluminescence; by contrast, conventional bulbs like the trusty incandescent that we all grew up with, rely on incandescence, ie heating a filament until it glows.
You see, LEDs are made up of a semiconductor material or ‘diode’, so that when an electric current is applied to it, electrons are knocked loose from the surface of the material, and in the process emit quanta of light energy known as photons. The earliest LEDs emitted only a small range of colors, but now there are all sorts of semiconductor materials used in these devices, and so a much broader lighting palette is possible.
Compared to conventional lighting technologies, like incandescent, fluorescent and halogen bulbs, LEDs deliver far superior energy efficiency, longevity, and they are also free of many of the problems that have long plagued these other lighting technologies – such as flickering, humming, poor light quality, excessive heat output, and the like.
